The Altiplano and its deserted landscapes, dotted by multicolored lagunas and surrounded by the high Andean volcanoes are the backdrop of our off-the-beaten-path expedition
From the colorful canyons of Tupiza to Sajama National Park and its abundant wild native species: vicuñas, flamingoes, viscachas and ibises… this little known circuit takes us to region of the Grand Lipez as well as the Grand Salar de Uyuni and its “little brother”, the Salar de Coipasa. For wild open spaces lovers! |

Day 1 :LA PAZ ARRIVAL / CITY TOUR |
 |
Pick up at the airport (flight number and arrival time to be confirmed) and transfer to hotel.
At 2 p.m., we meet at the reception of the hotel for a guided tour of La Paz, city located at almost 4000 m.a.s.l.: Sagárnaga Street and its local handicraft market (one of the most famous of South America), the witches’ street, San Pedro's food market, the historical center and the colonial neighborhood.

Day 2 :LA PAZ / PHOTO AND PANORAMIC TOUR – VALLEY OF THE MOON |

Departure from the hotel at 8:30 a.m. in our private vehicle, to discover the most spectacular viewpoint over the city, unbelievably located in the “pit” of the Choqueyapu river canyon, with the Royal Mountain Range “Giants” as the background: Huayna Potosi, Mururata and Illimani.
This tour, particularly designed for photo lovers, first takes us to the K´Illi K´Illi Mirador and to the Laykakota Park, on the Northwestern side of the city. Afterwards, we cross the Americas Bridge to go to the “Plaza de España” Mirador, in the colonial neighborhood of Sopocachi. From there, an abrupt descent leads us to the “South Zone”, passing through Llojeta and the “Garden Cemetery”, and finally to the Valley of the Moon, a place where we will be able to walk between psychedelic looking sandstone formations.
Return downtown in the afternoon.

Day 3 : LA PAZ – UYUNI |

4WD expedition from La Paz to Paz
Departure from the hotel at 8 a.m. in a private 4WD for a long ride south. We cross the whole Altiplano and see parts of very remote Bolivia. 3 hours on a paved road and we reach Oruro, town known for its indigenous carnival, the most important in South America after the one in Rio de Janeiro. One and a half hour later, we hit the dirt road in the village of Challapata. We arrive in Uyuni at the end of the day (4 to 5 hours from Challapata on a swampy track).

Day 4 : UYUNI - TUPIZA |
 |
9 a.m. departure to visit the train cemetery on the outskirt of town. We then head South and cross the pampa de Colcha, where only ghosts seem to accompany us. We then, literally, descend from the Altiplano to drive to the pleasant town of Tupiza (6/7 hours on a dirt road).

Day 5 :TUPIZA / CERROS MULTICOLORES (trek) |
 |
5 to 6-hour walk – Good physical condition required
This beautiful loop takes us through canyons and interesting geological formations of the mountains West of Tupiza: Puerta del Diablo, Valle de los Machos (rock formations resembling phallic symbols), Canyon of the Inca and Petrified forest of Waykho… View over Tupiza, Río Juan de Oro and the site of the “Sillar”…
The effects of the light on the Quebrada de Palala, when we return to Tupiza in the afternoon, will definitely make photographers happy.

Day 6 : TUPIZA - SAN ANTONIO DE LIPEZ |
 |
We literally climb to the Altiplano and enter areas mostly unknown to tourism. In this wild and deserted country, live condors and ostriches that have escaped the more traveled areas of the South of Lipez. We drive through the village of San Vicente, where Butch Cassidy and Billy the Kid ended their legendary epic then San Pablo de Lipez, before arriving at the end of the day in San Antonio.

Day 7 : SAN ANTONIO DE LIPEZ – LAGUNA CELESTE - QUETENA |

We head west towards the South of Lipez. Visit of the ancient village of San Antonio del Nuevo Mundo. According to the legend, the village was suddenly abandoned because of a massive and unexplained invasion of viscachas (rodent typical of this area). We pass by the strange geological formation of “Torreón”, then a pass at 4500 m.a.s.l., before descending towards Laguna Morejón. We change direction to visit Laguna Celeste. Then we get back on the road and head for the village of Quetena.

Day 8 :QUETENA – LAGUNA VERDE – LAGUNA COLORADA |

Departure in the morning towards the village of Quetena Grande. We then cross entirely the preserve of Eduardo Avaroa, passing by Laguna Salada and the Salar de Challviri. Before noon, we reach Laguna Verde and Laguna Blanca, at the foot of volcano Licancabur (el. 5960 m.a.s.l.). Lunch near the Hot Springs.
After lunch we head North, driving through the Dali desert (named for its landscapes reminiscent of one of his paintings) and by Sol de Mañana Geysers, a volcanic crater from which escape sulphuric fumes and heavy water. In the afternoon, we arrive at Laguna Colorada, sanctuary to 3 varieties of flamingoes.

Day 9 :LAGUNA COLORADA – JEWELS ROUTE - SAN JUAN |

We drive in the direction of the North through the magnificent landscapes of the Siloli desert before reaching the “Jewels Route”: lagunas Ramaditas, Honda, Ch’arkota, Hedionda and Cañapa, sanctuaries to 3 different types of flamingoes. We pass at the foot of two important volcanoes: Tomasamil (el. 5900 m.a.s.l.) and Ollagüe (still active), on the Chilean border. Later on, we cross the Chiguana Salar before arriving in the village of San Juan at the end of the day.

Day 10 :SAN JUAN - SALAR - JIRIRA |
 |
A 2-hour trip from San Juan will take us to the Salar de Uyuni (el. 3650 m.a.s.l.). On the way, we stop at “Devil’s Cave” and on the Island of Incahuasi, in the heart of the Salar (the Island. of volcanic origin, is covered with stromatolites and giant cactuses)
We then cross the Salar to reach its Northern extremity, at the foot of volcano Tunupa

Dayr 11 :ASCENT OF TUNUPA (PARTIAL / el.4700 m.a.s.l.) |

With guide – No technical difficulty – Good physical condition required
Early departure for the ascent of the volcano that dominates the whole of the Salar (our 4WD drops us off at the end of the dirt road above the village). In about 4 hours, we reach the viewpoint (el. 4700 m.a.s.l.) that offers an exceptional panorama. The summit (el. 5400 m.a.s.l.) can’t be attempted because of the potential danger due to the necessity of climbing over some cliffs. Return to Jirira in the afternoon.

Day 12 :JIRIRA - SALAR DE COIPASA – PISIGA |
 |
In the morning we drive to the Salar of Coipasa. We are in the heart of the wild altiplano, in the middle of arid scenery, surrounded by volcanoes that punctuate the nearby Chilean border …
We spend the night in Pisiga, small border village with Chile.

Day 13 :PISIGA – CHULLPAS DU RÍO LAUCA - SAJAMA |

We cross the Urus country on sandy and treacherous dirt roads. Before crossing the Río Lauca, appear the most beautiful polychromatic chullpas of Bolivia (the chullpas are the ancient tombs of Aymara lords; pre-Inca times). We reach Sajama National Park in the afternoon after a 5 to 6-hour journey.

Day 14 :SAJAMA – GEYSERS - TOMARAPI – LA PAZ |
 |
In the morning, we head to the geysers in our 4WD. This particularly active area offers a unique display of bubbling baths spread over hundreds of square meters. We can try cooking eggs in their slightly sulfuric water.
We then go to the natural hot springs for a relaxing bath at the foot of volcano Sajama, revered by the local population
The fauna is abundant: viscachas, vicuñas, ibises, ducks and wild geese. Finally, we visit the flamingoes on laguna Huaña Khota that we skirt on our way to the village of Tomarapi.In the afternoon, return to La Paz (3/4h) by way of the small village of Curahuara de Carangas and its colonial church richly decorated (perfectly preserved frescoes). On the way, we stop to visit chullpas, carangas tombs, now empty after their systematic pillaging.
