Along the way…

Rurrenabaque is the entryway to the Beni region, at the foot of the Serranias de Pilón Lajas and of Madidi and is the departing point for the excursions and stays in the Amazonian jungle and the pampa.
This trip takes you to camp Bala, on Rio Yacuma. The Eco-lodge, recently built, offers all the amenities (mosquito nets, toilets and showers) making it visitor friendly while respecting the environment. It is the best and most comfortable lodge in the area and is located in the heart of a pampa where Amazonian animals and plants abound.
Knowledgeable guides will accompany you on these excursions allowing you to explore this area in safety. This is an ideal setting to discover and to experience the Amazonian ecosystem.

PROGRAM
 
Day 1: LA PAZ – RURRENABAQUE – SAN MIGUEL DEL BALA

In the morning, pick up at the hotel for a private transfer to the airport. Flight La Paz – Rurrenabaque (1-hour). Pick up at the Rurrenabaque airport and transfer to the river where our boat awaits us.
After a 40-minute cruise up the Beni River, in the heart of the jungle, we arrive at the San Miguel del Bala eco-lodge. We lodge in cabañas.
Stroll around the rainforest with our Tacana guide to learn, among other things, about Tacana ancestral hunting techniques. The guide will explain how with just their snares, they obtained meat and leather from jaguars, wild boars, monkeys, etc.
Lunch is prepared from local ingredients and following traditional recipes.
In the afternoon, we go for a short walk through the San Miguel community. The guide will explain us the Tacanas costumes and their traditions (cultures, building techniques, religion… and local legends).
Return on foot to the eco-lodge (option to return by boat).
All included. Night at the lodge.

 
Day 2: SAN MIGUEL DEL BALA

After breakfast, while admiring the magnificent view over the River, we jump in our boat to reach the start of our trek. We follow the river in the heart of the tropical forest.
Along the way, our guide gives us information on the local fauna and flora. After a 1-hour walk we reach a pool of crystalline water coming from a beautiful waterfall. We enjoy a refreshing swim as well as the delicious massages provided but the waterfall. We return on foot to our boat and then to the Eco-lodge where our lunch awaits us, and why not? A nap in a hammock!
In the afternoon, stroll on a trail where we will learn about a large variety of medicinal plants: “The San Miguel’s Pharmacy”. The guide offers us his knowledge on these medicinal plants and explain us how it is possible to cure all disease with natural medicine and the power of the Pachamama – Mother Nature!
Return to the Eco-Lodge.
After dinner, the guide takes us for a nocturnal walk through the forest. Numerous animals such as monkeys have a more active during the night. Don’t forget to bring along a headlamp or torch to better observe them.

Day 3: SAN MIGUEL DEL BALA – MADIDI PARK - SAN MIGUEL DEL BALA

After breakfast, we return to our boat and enter the famous Park of Madidi. While following the Beni and Tuichi Rivers, we pass by the Serrania de Bala and reach Caquihuara, the Parabas sanctuary a local parrot species). During our hike we will probably get a chance to spot some caïmans, parrots, monkeys and other wild mammals.
A different walk takes us to the Parabas (red and blue parrots) observatory.
This bird species is on the verge of being instinct and their only habitat are the clay cliffs that are found here in Madidi Park. Lunch under the parrots’ fights.
For those who wish, the Rio invites us to a pleasant bath or to fish the dinner meal. Return to the Eco-lodge by the same Rios we arrived on.

DAY 4: SAN MIGUEL DEL BALA - RURRENABAQUE - LA PAZ

Today’s expedition is the last opportunity to observe monkeys, wild boars, tapirs, jochis or other animal afraid of man. Of course there is no guaranty that you will be able to see these animals, but the lush vegetation makes it worth trying anyway. The trail passes two beautiful natural wonders, and gigantic fruits offering great feeding opportunities for the wildlife surround us.
The great attraction of today’s itinerary is the 450 feet long Natural Canyon. The canyon is so narrow that, at times, one can touch both walls at the same time. We may benefit from a warm microclimate and spot frogs, salamanders and humming birds in their nests.
Return by boat to the Eco-Lodge for lunch and to get our luggage.
We then return by boat to Rurrenabaque and transfer to the airport. Flight Rurrenabaque – La Paz (45-minute).
Airport pick up and transfer to the hotel. End of day open.
