SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA
and surroundings…

Discovery 3 days Year round private

Spanish or English speaking guide

Along the way...

Discover San Pedro…
This oasis in the middle of the most arid desert on the planet, surrounded by imposing volcanoes, hides numerous surprises: some archaeological remains showing a human presence over 5000 years ago, a sky of an unequaled purity, geysers and other geological curiosities, surreal lagunas and inhabited by flamingoes…
Fruits of our 10-year experience in the region, we elaborated this 3-day program, letting you discover the essential of San Pedro and the surrounding area and to get a taste of what it has to offer in the most economical way.

PROGRAM

Day 1 : SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA / ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR /AUSTRAL SKY

Meeting with our guide at 9 a.m. We start by visiting the museum of father Le Paige exhibiting an impressive quantity of object from the atacameño culture. Those prove that the atacameños were in relation with the Amazonian people of the plains (for example we found some parrot feathers in the Atacama Desert!)
Then, with our vehicle, we visit the Aldea de Tulor (2800 B.C.) before heading on foot to the pre Inca pukara (fortress) de Quitor. This last place was the theatre of gory battles during the Spanish conquest; all the cacique atacameños (local chiefs) were decapitated. We keep on going downhill through the canyon of the Devil until we reach the archaeological ruins of Catarpe.
Return in San Pedro for lunch.
Lunch and dinner open. Hotel **.
OPTION: At nightfall, we depart with an astronomer for the observatory of San Pedro, for a “discovery of austral sky”. After 2 hours of observation with the naked eye and with a telescope, we return to the village, where we complete the explanations around a hot drink.
Note: excursion open to other participants (15 persons maximum) - OPTION AUSTRAL SKY: $ 25 US / person.

Day 2 : SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA / GEYSERS OF TATIO – VALLEY OF THE MOON

We depart at 4 a.m. towards the Tatio where we admire the geysers roaring in the cold air of the Altiplano. The valley looks like a giant pot. Water spurts here and there. This geological curiosity mixed a ground still frozen to clear water springs at more than 70°C. (2h30-trip). Option to bathe in one of the cooler hot springs. Return before noon to San Pedro by the Valley de Machuca.
At 4:30 a.m., our vehicle takes us to the Cordillera de Sal and the Valley of the Moon, where we walk though imposing scenery made of dunes and sculpted Sandstone Mountains. We admire the sunset (superb colors over the contorted landscape) before returning to San Pedro, cool oasis in the middle of the scorching Atacama Desert.
Lunch and dinner open. Hotel **.

Day 3 : SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA / SALAR D’ATACAMA – LAGUNAS MISCANTI AND MIÑIQUES

Day dedicate to the discovery of the Salar de Atacama and of its surroundings. Pueblo Toconao, Jerez Valley, Laguna Chaxa, Laguna Miscanti, Laguna Miñiques and their respective volcanoes. Return to San Pedro at the end of the day. Cold lunch (included). Dinner open. Hotel **.
