Ochre red terrain, the greenest of nature and swamps as far as the eye can see, this is the scenery that the Pantanal has to offer. These immense world heritage listed plains beg to reveal their extraordinary biodiversity. Almost African in appearance, it is a true explosion of colours and sounds, the flapping of wings await you, here lies an animal kingdom within your reach, unique to the world.
You have only just entered the Pantanal along one of it's few beaten earth tracks when the Jabiru, one metre tall and hooded in black, symbol of the Pantanal, welcomes you and invites you into it’s dominion. This huge, formidable creature is among the many species that populate this region which is thankfully almost untouched by human activity. Eagles, falcons, kingfishers, cormorants, appear from all over and the magnificent blue, red, yellow aras (“ large parrots ») waiting to be surprised !
At regular intervals along the track are situated wooden bridges that cross over rivers, where you can easily observe alligators waiting in ambush for their prey. Later, on horseback or on foot, you will find whole families of capybaras, huge rodents that live all over the Pantanal (there are 600.000 of them!). Elevated above the gigantic swamp of the Pantanal, in the midst of one of the forests, your « Pantanero » guide will disclose the secrets of this hostile yet passionate environment, medicinal plants, parasitical figs « trees that swallow up other trees », and how man succeeded in adapting to this special environment.
Some information about Pantanal
Pantanal has a unique ecosystem which covers an area the size of Colorado. Although part of Brazil, this immense swamp runs over Bolivian and Paraguayan territory. During the rainy season, from October to March, rivers of the surrounding highlands inundate the Pantanal, flooding most of it for six months. This routine inundation of water has made attempts at human activity difficult, allowing this superb, wild, hostile region become a naturally formidable shelter for a large number of species. The high tide renews supplies of nutrients for the soil, fish multiply and animals have an almost inexhaustible food supply; thus the swamps provide a truly ecologically rich environment for plant and animal life. The Pantanal thus constitutes a paradise for migrating birds or birds of prey, and for numerous large animals (jaguars, iguanas, pumas, wolves, giant anteaters, howling black monkeys, alligators, caimans, capybaras, anacondas, etc.) without forgetting that its waters constitute one of the most valued sites for fishermen from all over the world. |

We organize several excursions in the Pantanal, starting from Corumbá or from Campo Grande, according to your itinerary. Ideally it is best to spend two nights on site in a camp. Camps inside the Pantanal, in close proximity to this spectacular nature, undoubtedly offer the best possibilities of discovering this environment, but for this experience a certain degree of comfort has to be sacrificed. Stays from only one night to 3/4 nights on site are possible; it all depends on your program and your motivation to face the heat and mosquitoes! Generally excursions are subject to changes (according to the season, the size of the group, etc.) from camp to camp (or on a flotel or boat-hotel, a popular choice for fishing enthusiasts), in order to get as much out of your time as possible. Lodging conditions are basic, but sufficient. There are also more comfortable and more romantic options such as an ecolodge with buffet meals, private bathrooms and air-conditioning, for couples or families want to experience this magnificent nature, without sacrificing comfort levels or the possibility of dinners by candlelight !
Optional : flight over the Pantanal on a Cessna (1hr flight – about 300 Euros) |
