THE EXPEDITION
From the Andes to the heart of the Bolivian jungle

Trekking 12 days April to September Private Spanish or English speaking

Your trip

Who has not, at least once, dreamed of taking on the part of a 19th century explorer and of feeling, if only for a few days, the excitement of the daring naturalists that discovered the “New World”?
Our expedition starts in the Andes, at an elevation close to 5000 meters. It’s in this rocky landscape that begins our wild descent on foot, from the refuge of Qala Uta to the community of Poroma, nearly 4000 meters lower!
As did Orbigny and de Fawcett, we will certainly need to use our machete as we will enter deeper and deeper into the luxuriant tropical vegetation of the Amazon Basin. Day after day, the vegetation becomes denser and the air warmer and more humid …
This path previously used by the Incas, knew its glory during the times when the trade of Quina and natural Rubber was booming. It is today completely abandoned: It is the Inca trail the least known and certainly the most pristine.
We eventually reach Guanay, a gold-mining village, we then embark on board our pirogue for 3 unforgettable days: the descent of Río Beni, crossing from one extremity to the other Madidi and Pilón Lajas Parks, real sanctuaries of a Nature still untouched and intact.
Warning: Off-the beaten-path expedition  – very good physical condition necessary.

PROGRAM

Day 1: LA PAZ – QALA UTA REFUGE (el. 4550 m.a.s.l.)

Departure from the hotel at 9 a.m. in a private vehicle in the direction of the Cordillera Real. We follow the valley of the Three Lagunas until the Mullu pass (el. 4900 m.a.s.l. / 4-hour trip). Another hour of dirt track and we arrive at mina Fabulosa and then at Qala Uta (stone house, in the Aymara language). There, the community has built a beautiful refuge, in cooperation with the PRAIA foundation. Example of beautiful and successful development and of community ecotourism.
Cold lunch. All included. Night in the Refuge.

Day 2: QALA UTA SHELTER – CHALLANA (el. 2800 m.a.s.l.)

Departure in the morning through rocky and mountainous landscapes. After a 6 to 7-hour walk, we arrive in the green valleys of the Yungas! We notice the dramatic changes in climate and ecosystems along the way. The descent offers great viewpoints over the Cordillera.
Challana is a charming village perched on a promontory. Its colonial church is remarkable.
Cold lunch. All included. Night in a shelter (basic comfort).

Day 3: CHALLANA – CHOJLLA (el. 2300 m.a.s.l.)

We start our descent towards the Lowlands following the ancient trail of Quina linking the Andes to the tropical plains. With our local guide, we spot a variety of medicinal plants, as well as listen to numerous stories and legends. At the end of the afternoon we arrive at the viewpoint of Chojlla where we set up camp (6 to 7-hour walk).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.

Day 4: CHOJLLA – AYAWI (el. 1750 m.a.s.l.)

We continue our descent to Ayawi, where grow all sorts of tropical fruits. We find as well some corn plantations that used to be the reason for some intense trade with the mountainous regions at the time of the Incas, by this same trail (6 to 7-hour walk).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.

Day 5: AYAWI – JANAJAWIRA (el.1500 m.a.s.l.)

We enter deeper and deeper in the forest, following the steep mountainside. Down below, the Uma Palca River gains strength and rushes between huge rocks and canyons
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.

Day 6: JANAJAWIRA – PALCAPAMPA (el. 800 m.a.s.l.)

We pass by the abandoned villages of Jupo and Puri, booming at the time of the Quinoa trade.
Our trail waves though the low hills covered with pampa, until we reach the beaches of Palcapampa where we can swim or go fishing. The look of the river and the vegetation tells us that we are getting close to the Amazon Basin (6-h walk)
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.

Day 7: PALCAPAMPA – SAPOCUNI (el. 600 m.a.s.l.)

We leave the valley to take the direction of the beaches of Sapocuni. We spend our last night in a thatched roof hut (5-6-hour walk).
Cold lunch. All included. Bivouac.

Day 8: SAPOCUNI – POROMA (el. 500 m.a.s.l.) – GUANAY

A 5 to 6-hour walk to reach the community of Poroma, where we say goodbye to our team. A 4WD vehicle takes us to Guanay, a gold-digger town where, until a recent past, it was still possible to pay with gold nuggets!
Cold lunch. Dinner open. Night in a guesthouse (basic comfort).

Day 9: GUANAY – RÍO KAKA

3 days descent in a pirogue along the Amazon River of Beni – totally off-the-beaten-path.
Embark on our motorized pirogue for our three-day crossing of the old growth forest. We follow the course of one of the biggest Amazonian rivers of Bolivia, which curves between the last « serranías », small mountain ranges that don’t exceed a few hundred meters in height, last trace of the Cordillera of the Andes.
Each day we enjoy a short hike into the forest, to swim in one of the innumerable crystal clear waterfalls that mark our way and meet some indigenous communities. We, also, get a chance to discover the abundant flora and the exuberant fauna of the Amazon: Capybaras, monkeys, birds in the thousand… a real communion with nature.
Everything included. Bivouac (if it rains, possibility of shelter under thatched roofs).

Day 10: RÍO KAKA – RÍO BENI

The river, at this point, receives the waters of Río La Paz, after its tour of the Illmani mountain range, before dropping into the Amazon Basin. On the right bank, we find the Biospheric Preserve of Pilón Lajas, while on the left bank is located the High Madidi National Park. We are in the heart of a still virgin and preserved nature; It is one of the most precious jewels on our planet.
All included. Bivouac (in case it rains, we spend the night under a thatched roof).

Day 11: RÍO BENI – RURRENABAQUE

We keep on descending the river. We pass the canyon of Beo (last gorge and last “serranía” of our trip) before entering Madidi National Park and Rurrenabaque at the end of the day. We are now on the immense plain stretching all the way into Brazil.
Lunch included. Dinner open. Hotel ***.

Day 12: RURRENABAQUE – LA PAZ

Transfer to the airport. Return flight Rurrenabaque – La Paz (1h – flight schedule varying depending on the days). Pick up at the La Paz airport and transfer to the hotel.
Lunch and dinner open. Hotel ***.
