Day 1: Santiago de Chile

Arrival at Santiago and transfer to your hotel in a private vehicle, with an english speaking guide.
Visit of Chile's capital, nestled at the foot of the Andes. Although Santiago has become over the years a modern and bustling city, some older neighbourhoods have preserved their atmosphere and a romantic charm.
You will visit the Plaza de Armas, San Francisco Church, the Bellavista area, Cerro San Cristobal, etc.

Day 2: Santiago de Chile - Valleys of the Atacama Desert - San Pedro de Atacama

Private transfer from your hotel to Santiago airport.



Arrival at Calama airport and private transfer to San Pedro de Atacama, a small oasis in the middle of the driest desert on Earth.

An English-speaking guide will be with you during the transfer.
In the middle of the afternoon, departure to the Cordillera de Sal (salt mountains) and the Moon Valley to have a walk in a magnificent landscape made of sand dunes and sculpted calcareous mountains. Make sure you watch the sunset project amazing colors over the tortuous scenery before going back to San Pedro.

Day 3: The Atacama lagunas - Rainbow valley - San Pedro de Atacama

At 9:00 a.m. departure to the north of the Salar de Atacama and the lagoon Cejar. Swimming break in the lagoon where you will surprisingly float, given the extreme salt concentration, an unforgettable moment in the desert! You continue to the Ojos del Salar, another lagoon where you can swim. End of the Tour at the Laguna Tebenquinche to enjoy the beautiful colors of the Licancabur volcano. Back to San Pedro.
In the morning, visit the Yerbas Buenas valley, where the Domeyko Cordillera, Andean cordillera and the Salt cordillera meet.This is where we visit the petroglyphs of different periods. You then continue up the Arco Iris valley, which offers multiple colors made ​​of clay and several minerals. Back to San Pedro early afternoon.

Day 4: El Tatio Geysers - San Pedro de Atacama

Departure between 4.30 and 6.00 (time depends on the vehicle, the number of passengers and the season) from the hotel towards the Tatio. You will arrive at the perfect time to admire the sunrise and the geysers roaring in the cold air of the Altiplano. The valley looks like a giant pot. Water spurts here and there. This geological curiosity mixes a ground still frozen with boiling hot clear water springs (70°C/160°F). Observation of numerous volcanic formations.
After a few hours, return to San Pedro via the Machuca Valley.

Day 5: Salar de Tara - San Pedro de Atacama

In the morning, departure for the the Salar de Tara in a 4WD. A steep hill takes you to the Altiplano towards the border post of Paso Jama. After 60 miles and a 3-hour drive, you will discover the famous Salar de Tara, offering one of the most impressive landscapes of the Altiplano. At an altitude of 4,300m, this salar is surrounded by beautiful volcanoes. Volcanic roc formations eroded by time form the most amazing shapes: the guardians of Pacana and the Tara cathedrals. The Tara Lagoon allows fauna and flora to survive in such a hostile environment.
You will get back to San Pedro at the end of the day.

Note: Because of the altitude, you will spend the entire tour in the car. Dress up according to the cold weather.

Day 6: San Pedro de Atacama - Salta - San Pedro de Atacama


Regular bus from San Pedro de Atacama to Salta.

Day 15: Paso Hito Cajon - San Pedro de Atacama


Early in the afternoon you pass the Bolivian border at Hito Cajón. An hour drive takes you to San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 7: Salta - Quebrada de Escoipe - Cachi

Departure to Cachi, located at 2200masl, at 157km from Salta.


We drive through spectacular landscapes such as those offered by the Piedra del Molino mountain pass at 3,600 meters, the Quebrada de Escoipe, a deep gorge where the green of the woods contrasts with the ochre of the soil on the bare mountains of “Cuesta del Obispo” and Los Cardones National Park composed of stark expanses scattered with candelabrum-shaped cacti…


Cachi is a tranquil Andean native village featuring low-whitewashed houses and the San José Church with its sculpted roof of cactus-wood dating back to the eighteenth century. We visit the small archaeological museum which has a wonderful collection of pre-Inca and Inca ceramics, especially those pertaining to the Santa María culture.


We head to La Paya Ruins. It is an important site, with many ring walls, circular stone tombs and the place known as the Casa Morada del Inca, a separate building from the rest, apparently built as a transit station in the Inca Trail.


We return to Cachi.

Day 8: Cachi - Molinos - Cafayate

Departure by private vehicle to reach the small town of Molinos, dating from 1659; there is a church, probably erected in the late eighteenth century, by the last royal governor of Salta, Don Nicolás Severo of Isasmendi, buried there. Around this chapel, the town of Molinos grew.


You cross the majestic "Quebrada de las Flechas" surrounded by a mysterious moonscape.


White dunes announce the nearness of Cafayate, the largest city in the valley of Calchaquies, whose economy relies on the wine industry. Wine tasting in the evening.

Day 9: Cafayate - Quebrada de las Conchas - Salta

This morning, we travel to Salta through the “Quebrada de las Conchas” which undoubtedly offers the visitor one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Northwest of Argentina, with its imposing semi-desert mountains featuring multi-colored rock formations sculpted by erosion.


A century-old sight conceived by nature for our benefit!

Day 10: Salta - San Antonio de los Cobres - Salinas Grandes - Purmamarca

We ride in a private vehicle along the railway tracks of the famous “Tren de las Nubes” and head first for Salinas Grandes and then for Purmamarca.


We leave Salta (1,200 masl) and after a 166km (104mi) ride, we arrive in San Antonio de los Cobres at 3,774 masl. Before we stop to visit Santa Rosa de Tastil (3,200 masl) and the pre-Inca site which dates back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries AD (a half-hour walk, approximately).


Later, we stop in San Antonio de los Cobres. Surrounded by mountains with virtually no vegetation, this wind swept village and its low buildings give an impression of remoteness. We visit the small museum dedicated to the highest railway-track in the world. Countless pictures describe its construction in the 1930s: what a saga!


As we follow our road, we reach a vast white expanse of land which contrasts against the pure blue of the sky. We are now in the very midst of one of the largest salt deserts in Argentina (1,200 sq. km), Salinas Grandes.


As we drive along a winding dirt track for a few miles, we reach the Lipán Mountain Pass, located at 4,170 masl and later the last stop of the day’s tour: Purmamarca, “the Holy Land” in Aymara language. This little town is renowned for its seven-colored mountain, “Cerro de los Siete Colores”, a mineral rainbow.


Note 1: a 347km (216mi) trip with some delicate mountain tracks lasting approximately 6h30 min.


Note 2: during the rainy season, between November and March, the access to the Salinas Grandes might become virtually impossible.

Day 11: Purmamarca - Tilcara - Huamahuaca - La Quiaca

A quiet day-start to enjoy the "Cerro de los 7 colores" and the village of Purmamarca.


Departure by private vehicle to hit the Andean road, arrive after twenty kilometres to Pucará Tilcara, a pre-Hispanic Omaguaca village founded over 900 years ago. We visit the village and the remarkable collection housed in its museum including mummies, funeral vases, jewellery and other objects found in archaeological sites in the Northwest of Argentina.


We continue north to Humahuaca, located at 2940masl, one of the most important trade centres in times of the Vice Regency of Peru.


We pass through Abra Pampa and reach finally La Quiaca, next to the Argentine – Bolivian border.

Day 11: Villazon - Tupiza

Our Bolivian driver will awaits us at the border post of Villazón (el 3450 m.a.s.l.) to bring us to the pleasant town of Tupiza (el. 2850 m.a.s.l.), well known for its far-west looks and spectacular red rocks canyons. We will drive around 90 km (1.5h) crossing vast desert plains and following the Tupiza River.

Day 12: Tupiza - Uyuni

Today we will drive around 200 km (6 to 7h) to reach Uyuni, small town located very close to the famous Salar, at el. 3650 m.a.s.l. We will leave Tupiza at 09:00 am and climb up to the Altiplano before crossing the desert pampa of Colcha.

Day 13: Uyuni - San Juan

Today we will discover the world’s largest salt desert! We leave the hotel at 09:00 a.m. with our private jeeps to the Salar de Uyuni (el. 3650 m.a.s.l.). After an half an hour ride, we will stop in the village of Colchani to visit its salt exploitation and salt hotel (the only one built on the Salar, closed since 2001). We will then ride 73 km on the salt desert (around an hour and a half) to reach the Island of Incahuasi. This surprising island lost in the middle of the salar offers an incredible view over the salt desert and the several volcanoes that surround it. Of volcanic origin, it is covered with stromatolites and giant cacti (stromatolites are fossilized bacterial colonies, first traces of life on earth). In the afternoon, we will keep riding 34 km on the white desert (around half an hour) to reach its southern extremity. We will then drive 55 km more to the village of San Juan (el. 3600 m.a.s.l.), where we will spend the night. This small village is famous for its surprising mummies of the “Lipez Lords” (1200 after J.C) and its small museum.

Day 14: San Juan - Siloli Desert

We begin today our journey across the Sur Lipez area, elevated region of colorful landscapes and lagoons, rock formations and volcanoes. We will first cross the small Salar de Chiguana (el. 3650 m.a.s.l.), at the feet of the Tomasamil volcano (el. 5900 m.a.s.l.) The track will then climb up to 4200 m.a.s.l. and we will stop at the view point of volcano Ollagüe (el. 5868 m.a.s.l.). This volcano is still active and shelters one of the world’s highest open pit copper mines. We will then drive south along the Chilean border on the scenic “Route of the Jewels”, which owes its name to all the lagoons along its way: Honda, Ch’arkota, Hedionda, Cañapa. These lagoons are home to three specific species of flamingoes. Our track then continues in the middle of the superb landscapes of the Siloli desert (el. 4700 m.a.s.l.) where our hotel for tonight is. We will arrive at the end of the day, having driven around 160 km today.

Day 15: Siloli Desert - Paso Hito Cajon

Let’s go to Chile! First we will cross the Siloli Desert and discover its famous “Stone Tree”. After 70 km we will reach the Laguna Colorada (el. 4278 m.a.s.l.). This immense lake of pinkish water owes its name to the presence in its waters of light sensitive phytoplankton, which also attracts thousands of flamingo part of the year. We will then visit the geysers Sol de Mañana (el. 4850 m.a.s.l.), a volcanic crater with sulphur springs and boiling mud. Next stop: the Polques thermal spring. You are almost 4200 m.a.s.l.; but get ready to jump into hot water (86°F/30°C), surrounded by an amazing frozen landscape of volcanoes. We will then jump back into the jeeps and ride along the Laguna Salada and the Dali Desert. Here the strong wind has created surprising rock formations that remind the paintings of the Spanish master. Before lunch we will reach the Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde (el. 4350 m.a.s.l.), at the foot of volcanoes Juriques and Licancabur (el. 5704 and 5960 m.a.s.l.). After riding a total of around 200 km we will reach the border cross of Hito Cajón at the beginning of the afternoon. Here our Chilean driver awaits us to drive us to San Pedro de Atacama.
