Southern Cordillera Trek

After an acclimatization to Lake Titicaca, we offer 8 days of trek that take us to the South of the Cordillera to the Huayna Potosí massif, before sinking into the tropical vegetation of the Yungas, using the Inca paved path Choro , perfectly preserved.

1

El Alto Airport - La Paz

A private driver will pick you up at the international airport of El Alto and drive you to your hotel in La Paz.

La Paz

Our private driver will pick us up in the hotel lobby at 9:00 am for a full-day tour around the best points of view over the city and into the Moon Valley. La Paz, world’s highest capital elected in 2014 as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities, is surrounded by the high picks of the Andes.

From many parts of the city we can admire the white summits of the Cordillera Real and the imposing Illimani, protector of the city. From the K’Illi K’Illi mirador and the Laykakota Park we will enjoy a panoramic view over the capital. The Montículo, in the bohemian Sopocachi is the classical meeting point of lovers and newlyweds for romantic pictures.

Since 2014 La Paz is proud of its new cable cars. From the sky the panorama over the city and the mountains is unique and we can have a feel of the social gaps while flying over different neighborhoods.

We will then drive to the south, across the rich "Zona Sur" and get out of the city to enter the Moon Valley. Here we can enjoy the quietness and walk amongst the lunar rock formations during an hour.

In the afternoon we will go back to the historical center and wander around its colorful markets.

NOTE: The K’Illi K’Illi mirador and the Laykakota Park are closed on Mondays.

La Paz - Copacabana - Yumani

Departure from the hotel at 9 a.m. with a private transport. We will follow the Lake Titicaca and the Cordillera Real until Copacabana (3 ½ hours).
HERE STARTS YOUR TRIP ON THE FAMOUS SACRED LAKE!

By motorboat, we reach the cave of Lourdes. Our trek on the Yampupata peninsula starts from there. We cross the timeless village of Zampaya...

Later on we reach the village of Yampupata. A boat takes us to the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), where we disembark at the old Inca Palace of Pilkokaina. A 1h15 walk brings us to the village of Yumani, from where there is a magnificent view of the lake.

Note: During 2 days, a boat will be at our disposal to transport the group as well as the bags during the walks.

Copacabana - Tuni - Yumani

Departure from Copacabana with a private 4WD. We will follow the Lake Titicaca and the Cordillera Real all the way to Tuni (4 hours).
From Yumani, we start the trek by following the crest of the Island to the North where we find the vestiges of the Inca ruins of Chincana, the labyrinth in Aymara (3 to 4-hour walk).
Our boat takes us back to Copacabana after lunch.

Tuni - Laguna Jurikhota

ENJOY A THRILLING TREK IN THE CORDILLERA
Difficulty: 4 to 6-hour hike a day. Good fitness required.
Departure from the village of Tuni. After following Tuni lake, we will cross a pass at an elevation of 4900 meters above sea level, before descending to the Juri Khota lagoon (a 4-hour walk). We will enjoy an amazing view of the “Cabeza de Condor” summit, also known as El Condoriri, shaped like a condor with tucked wings (el.5648 m.a.s.l.).

Laguna Jurikhota - Laguna Chiarkhota

We will take a steep track to the Laguna Congelada (frozen lagoon), a wonder at an elevation of 4900 m.a.s.l., at the foot of the "Condoriri" summit (el. 5650 m.a.s.l.) with two glaciers dropping into it. We will then get over the Paso Austria (el 5160 m.a.s.l.) and walk down to the Laguna Chiarkhota (el. 4670 m.a.s.l.), the base camp for the ascent of the Condoriri and of the Pequeño Alpamayo moutains. Before the Paso Austria, we can climb the Pico Austria (el. 5300 m.a.s.l.), from where the view on the Condoriri and of the Cordillera Real is incredible.

Laguna Chiarkhota - Laguna Liviñosa

We will cross two successive passes (Jallayko el. 5025 m.a.s.l. / Jistaña el. 4930 m.a.s.l.) before starting the long descent to the Laguna Liviñosa (el. 4270 m.a.s.l.). From there we can admire the imposing Huayna Potosí (el. 6088 m.a.s.l.), dominating the valley where we will enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Laguna Liviñosa - Uma Palca

We will continue the descent into deeper and narrower valleys. The vegetation becomes thicker and the air warmer. We will arrive to the village of Botijlaca (3600 m.a.s.l.) with a moderate climate. An climb of 3 to 4 hours on the slopes of Tikimani (5519m el.) will take us to a pass at an elevation of 4600m.a.s.l. before a 2 hour descent to Uma Palka, our stop for the night.

9

Uma Palca - Zanja Pampa

We will walk on the Cerro Matildes 's slopes (5000m el.) for 2 hours before going up to the Laguna Chiar Khota (4370 m el.). The view is just amazing. We will pass a second lake at 4560m.a.s.l. and climb a last steep section. Descent to Zanja Pamp (3 hours) where we will set up the camp.

10

Zanja Pampa - Choro

The trek continues on the mountain slopes for about 1-hour before arriving to the Laguna Khota Kuchu. We will then descend towards the hamlet of Chukura, where we will join the pass of the Choro trek. We now follow the magnificent paved Inca trail towards the village of Challapampa (about 1½-hour) and then to the village of Choro. Leaving behind us the Andean landscape, the vegetation will become sub-tropical. The environment changes as we will loose altitude: thick vegetation, heat and humidity.

11

Choro - Sandillani

We will cross the suspended bridge over the Chucura River. After a succession of slight uphills and downhills we will arrive to the village of San Francisco (3 to 4-hour). We will cross the Coscapa River and start up Devil’s Hill to reach the village of Sandillani at the end of the day (el. 2000 m.a.s.l.

Sandillani - Coroico - Chairo

After walking a few more hours, the trek will frinish in Chairo (el. 1300 m.a.s.l.), from where a 4WD will drive us to Coroico, the pearl of the Yungas, for a well deserved rest.
Cold lunch. Hotel with swimming pool.
Hiking time: 2h; Elevation gain: -700m
